RWA National Conference - Jane Porter On Writing

July 17, 2007

Here are some of my notes on the key points to Jane Porter's talk about writing at the RWA Nationals Conference in Dallas this year.

  • Write what you want to write, don't write to trends
  • Publishing trends are cyclical. E.g. Medieval is in sometimes, out other times.
  • You need a strong voice, strong plot, and lots of tension
  • Plausibility is not as important as keeping the page turning
  • Writing may be all creativity and art, but publishing is all business
