Falling In Love Again by Cathy Maxwell

coverFalling in Love Again by Cathy Maxwell is a refreshing tale of a botched arranged marriage, debtor's prison, and how reformed rakes can make the best husbands, after all. Abandonned on her wedding night, Mallory Edwards is left in the country while her erstwhile husband heads back to London, to his mistress and his other less-than-proper entertainments. Mallory is content to live in her castle in the country, until one day, seven years after they marry, it is taken away from her and she is thrown out on the street.

It's obviously past time for Mallory to confront her wastrel of a husband, so she heads to London. John Barron has never much cared for the responsibilities associated with his title. Instead he lets his uncle handle his affairs whilest he does what he pleases. He's a bit surprised and amused when his lovely little wife shows up at his evening entertainment. After all, he takes good care of her. But things suddenly go drastically wrong - he finds that his fortune has disappeared and he's in real danger of going to debtor's prison. How could he have been so careless?

Thus begins the race for John to clear his family name, and get Mallory's estate back for her. Hiding in the country as an estate manager and his wife, John and Mallory have a chance to get to know each other, respect each other, and fall in love despite secrets, seductions and the fact that John knows absolutely nothing about estate management and must rely on his wife to help him out. The secondary characters are well written and likeable. Cathy Maxwell did especially well capturing country life in the fields of rural Sussex.
