Midsummer Magic by Catherine Coulter

August 16, 2004

coverIn the first book of Catherine Coulter's Magic Trilogy, Scottish beauty Frances Kilbracken does not much care for her father's agreement with the English earl to have one of his sons marry one of his daughters. When the man shows up to choose his bride, Frances decides to ensure that she is not the one he chooses. What follows is a comical attempt at disgusting the haughty man only to have it backfire on Frances in a most disturbing way.

Hawk has his choice of two high maintenance beauties and a hag that he can stash at his country estate and not miss a beat of his London life. He chooses Frances and then direly mistreats her, before abandonning her in the country. However, when he returns he's in for quite a surprise - for his hag of a wife is actually a talented beauty who was obviously out to trick him. Much of this story involves how Frances and Hawk find a balance in their married life and come to love each other. However, there are a lot of distressing scenes of forced marrital relations before Hawk gets his act together and realizes what a fool he's being - making him a difficult character to really appreciate, although Frances is an incredibly charismatic heroine!
