Secrets of a Perfect Night by Laurens, Alexander and Gibson

August 04, 2004

coverSecrets of a Perfect Night is one of the strongest, most well-written romance anthologies we've seen to date. The trio of stories by romance writers extraordinaire - Stephanie Laurens, Victoria Alexander and Rachel Gibson - are all based on old loves rekindled during the magic of a New Years Eve, and unlike most compilations where one story sticks out amongst the mediocre, all three of the stories in Secrets of a Perfect Night are warm and satisfying.

Scandalous Lord Dere by Stephanie Laurens
Laurens launches the anthology with the tale of Viscount Dare, an infamous rake fleeing the amorous intentions of much of the female half of London's society. Jaded and feeling a bit cheap and underappreciated for his skills outside of the bedroom, Adrian heads home for the first time since his father's death. He becomes caught in a snowstorm and seeks shelter in a cottage, only to find it inhabited not by the old biddy who once lived there, but by the childhood sweetheart he left years ago when he was young and foolish, and his parents had tried to matchmake him. Seeing her again is the breath of fresh air he needs, and he sets out to convince the lady of his desire to have and hold her forever, but she doesn't believe him.

The Last Love Letter by Victoria Alexander
Perhaps the most heart-rending story of the anthology, The Last Love Letter is the story of two star-crossed lovers, seperated by circumstances beyond their control, and reunited ten years later by a love letter from beyond the grave, written by the heroine's late husband. Once Rachel and Jason were very young and very much in love, but Rachel's father wanted a more politically oriented marriage for his only daughter. Discovering that the lovebirds planned to run away together, her wicked father foiled the attempt, leaving a grieving Jason and a ruined Rachel. Having no other choice, Rachel marries Jason's kind but much older cousin. Upon her husband's death bed, he writes letters to both Jason and Rachel, attempting to set the record straight once and for all for the two people he loves most in the world. Alexander spends time on the little details, like the fact that although they were young lovers, they never got to dance together, share a bed or admire each other as they slept. For some reason even some lines like "It was a lifetime ago... Or was it only yesterday?" don't seem too contrived when spoken between the hero and heroine of this story.

Now and Forever by Rachel Gibson
Brina McConnell was known as Munchkin McConnell in high school, but now she's all grown up. Bracing herself, she heads off to her high school reunion, only to be reunited with her best friend since first grade. Although Brina and Thomas dated for a short time in high school, it just didn't work out. Years later, they are still attracted to each other, and their history hasn't faded nearly as much as they thought. Set against the backdrop of a ski resort, this story is the only contemporary tale of the anthology, but it holds its own.
