The Seduction of an English Lady by Cathy Maxwell

August 16, 2004

coverCathy Maxwell delivers another heartwarming story of two people - the daughter of an earl and the son of a cobbler - and how they overcome the bonds of society and fall in love. Colonel Colin Mandland is intensely ambitious. All he wants is to be knighted and prove that he can rise above his humble background. Rosalyn Wellborne is a priviledged lady of the peerage who has never known the love of a parent or relative, but still lives within the boundaries of a society that has never done anything for her.

The Seduction of an English Lady is a fun tale. It begins with Colin arriving at Rosalyn's estate and announcing that he has purchased it from her rascal of a cousin to pay his gaming debts off. Rosalyn refuses to move out, and the locals decide that the best way forward is for Colin, who is the legitimate owner of the property, should marry Lady Rosalyn so she can stay. The deal is sweetened in such a way as to make it very difficult for the ambitious young man to ignore. The story has some truly wonderful scenes, including their wedding mishap, which keep the story rolling and the reader engaged.

With The Seduction of an English Lady, Maxwell provides an excellent show of how the love of friends can be just as important as the love of family, and how forgiveness is always something to strive for. Colin is a likeable hero despite his somewhat mercenary approach to everything. His realization of his motives and attitudes, and how he goes about reaffirming his original goals, is well done and interesting to read.
