Welcome To Temptation by Jennifer Crusie

cover"Welcome to Temptation" reads the roadsign as the Dempsey sisters roll into town. No stranger to temptation, the members of the Dempsey family are known for being slightly crooked, in a rather noble way, though. Our heroine, Sophie Dempsey, is just trying to keep her wayward siblings on the straight and narrow, so they don't turn out like dad. No matter how she tries, she can't stay out of trouble. Not five minutes pass within the boundaries of Temptation when things go awry - a phallic watertower causes a fenderbender with a crazy local polititian. What follows is a delightful tale of a good girl and the town's sexy mayor, Phin Tucker, and the crazy citizens of Temptation.

Jennifer Crusie weaves a fun tale of silly small town politics, love, jealousy, betrayal and scams. Her characters are likeable, and they are many. Crusie paints a hilarious picture of small town life that hits close to home. Phin is a highly loveable hero - a nice guy with a young daughter, who just wants to leave his laughable town meetings and go shoot pool and have a beer with his buddy, the police chief. Sophie starts out very cool and inhibited, compared to her spitefire of a little sister, but soon warms to the situation. With intermittent headbanging sex and despite a murder, Sophie and Phin manage to navigate jealous neighbors, scamming spouses, mother-in-laws. This story also has one of those very memorable scenes that stick in your memory long after you've moved on - Jennifer Crusie nailed the pool scene between timid Sophie, daughter of the scammer, and Phin, pool enthusiast. Great fun!
