 Beth Artimage is decidedly a bluestocking. She follows the teachings of women's rights activist Mary Wollstonecraft and is happy with her simple life as a teacher at Miss Mallory's School for Ladies. Then the Duke of Belcraven comes to see her and forces her into a marriage she never intended to occur, but sees little possibility of escape from.
Lucien de Vaux is furious at his father for forcing him to marry Miss Artimage, but he too sees no other choice. Then, in a desperate attempt to end the betrothal, Beth foolishly tells Lucien a falsehood that threatens to ruin any possible chance of happiness for the couple. It takes the help of the rest of the Company of Rogues (this is the second book in the series) and a harrowing adventure to save one of her former students from a terrible fate to cement the couple's future in happiness.
