In Potent Pleasures, Eloisa James tells the touching and sometimes heart-rending story of Charlotte Daicheston. On the brink of womanhood, only weeks before her come-out, Charlotte recklessly attends a lurid masquerade ball only to be swept off her feet by a handsome young man who then disappears without a trace. Charlotte is left with some difficult decisions on how she will live her life thereafter.
We watch Charlotte grow into a capable young woman comfortable with herself, and finally cast off her demure and missish airs to become a very vibrant woman. Suddenly she's an incomparable! Little did she know, however, that her handsome footman was none other than an earl. When Alex returns after years abroad, he is immediately taken with Charlotte, although he does not recognize her for the girl who has haunted his every waking moment since their time in the garden. What follows is a haphazard wooing in which the earl takes his young daughter to various inappropriate yet amusing places, before he finally convinces Charlotte to be his. Your heart will ache for Charlotte, who has consistently told Alex that they have met before, but he is convinced she has mistaken him for his twin, when in fact it was he who met her. This causes much heartbreak for the otherwise happy newlyweds, and it is not until its almost too late that Alex realizes his mistake. James presents us with a real tear-jerker here, and we highly recommend it. Well developed characters and a charming setting make this highly sensual plot a part of our Keeper list.
