Because of You by Cathy Maxwell

October 07, 2004

Cathy Maxwell delivers yet another heartwarming romantic tale of a vicar's daughter and the disinherited son of a duke. Samantha is living quietly as a healer in the odd little backwater town of Sproule when Yale Carderock returns to visit his father's grave. Years before they quarreled, and in a fit of anger, Yale left England to make his own fortune. Now he has returned to prove to his father that he's not worthless, only to find that his father passed away mourning the loss of his beloved son.

Because of You is a passionate tale. Yale is stubborn and used to having his independence, but clearly is a caring man from the very beginning of the tale, and Maxwell takes care to show how Samantha manages to find her place in the wealthy and powerful family. Some of the best plot devices of this novel are the accurately described secondary characters - especially those hypocritical fair-weather villagers living in Sproule. You too will feel the anger at Samantha's situation, understand Yale's motives and feelings toward his family, and ultimately understand the importance of balance between family and independence.
